BIOREFINE: Creating Synergies for a More Circular and Sustainable Europe

Europe’s transition towards a climate-neutral and circular economy requires collaboration between researchers, industries, policymakers, regional authorities, and citizens for scientific breakthroughs and technological innovation. As bio-based solutions continue to gain momentum across Europe, strong links between projects and stakeholders has become essential for turning innovative ideas into tangible environmental, economic, and societal benefits.

BIOREFINE Cluster Europe is a collaborative network that brings together projects and professionals working in the field of biobased resource recovery and biorefinery technologies. Founded following the Interreg NWE Biorefine project, BIOREFINE has evolved into a unique European platform with more than 40 projects, over 250 organisations, and more than 750 experts from across Europe, representing a collective investment of approximately €160 million in research and innovation activities. Its primary objective is to ensure that project results continue generating value long after individual projects have ended, while strengthening collaboration and visibility across the European bioeconomy landscape.

Turning Project Results into Long-Term Impact

Many EU-funded projects face similar challenges: how to increase stakeholder engagement, support market uptake, influence policy development, and ensure that valuable knowledge does not disappear when project funding ends. BIOREFINE addresses these challenges by creating a collaborative environment where projects can exchange experiences, share results, and build new partnerships. The cluster focuses on five key objectives:

  • Enhancing interaction and knowledge exchange between projects;
  • Strengthening stakeholder outreach and communication;
  • Supporting practical business implementation;
  • Contributing to policy recommendations;
  • Identifying knowledge gaps and stimulating the development of new projects.

BIOREFINE’s activities include six major thematic areas that are critical for the development of a sustainable bioeconomy (figure below, taken from BIOREFINE website). These fields play an essential role in reducing waste, recovering valuable resources, and replacing fossil-based products with sustainable alternatives. Through collaboration and knowledge sharing, BIOREFINE helps accelerate innovation and support the transition towards more circular production systems across Europe.

Increasing Visibility and Outreach

A key strength of BIOREFINE lies in its communication and dissemination activities. The cluster serves as a central platform where participating projects can share activities, results, deliverables, publications, and events with a wide audience of stakeholders.

Through its website, newsletter, social media channels, workshops, and stakeholder events, BIOREFINE ensures that project outcomes reach researchers, industry representatives, SMEs, policymakers, public authorities, and other relevant actors. The website hosts an e-library with deliverable and outputs from member projects. Moreover, the cluster’s bi-monthly newsletter alone reaches more than 2,700 subscribers, contributing to the continuous exchange of knowledge within the bioeconomy community.

In addition, BIOREFINE actively supports networking and clustering initiatives, helping projects identify synergies, develop joint activities, and collaborate on common challenges.

Supporting Projects Like FUELGAE

As a member of the wider European bioeconomy ecosystem, FUELGAE benefits from the opportunities that BIOREFINE creates for networking, knowledge exchange, and stakeholder engagement. By connecting with other EU-funded projects working on resource recovery, renewable energy, biomass valorisation, and circular economy solutions, FUELGAE partners can increase the visibility of its results and contribute to a larger community their knowledge, expertise, and achievements to strengthen the cluster and enrich the wider bioeconomy community.

This collaborative model creates a win-win relationship. BIOREFINE helps projects extend the life of their results beyond the duration of their funding period, while projects strengthen the cluster by bringing fresh ideas, innovative technologies, and practical experiences. Together, they create a dynamic European community that accelerates innovation, supports policy development, promotes business opportunities, and advances the transition towards a more sustainable and circular bioeconomy.
